From 9 metres to 17.85 metres in shot put: Emmanuel receives ₦250,000 through AIF 2.0.

At 17, Nigerian throws athlete Audu Emmanuel Shakamomodu is working towards becoming one of the best throwers in the world. Representing Edo State, Emmanuel has made significant progress in shot put, moving from a throw of 9 metres to a personal best of 17.85 metres through training, dedication, and perseverance.

Behind this progress is a young athlete navigating financial hardship, interrupted educational opportunities, and the challenge of building an athletic career largely through his own efforts.

Discovering His Talent

Emmanuel’s athletics journey began during inter-house sports competitions in secondary school. Initially involved in track events, he was later introduced to throws coach Godwin by Coach John, who recognised his potential in throwing events.

With his muscular build and growing interest in the discipline, Emmanuel began focusing on shot put, alongside discus and hammer throw. Although he trained inconsistently in 2023, he began competing in 2024 and has continued developing his abilities.

His progress from 9 metres to 17.85 metres reflects the work he has put into his development. He has also won medals representing his state and country at regional and international competitions.

Despite these achievements, maintaining consistency in competition remains a challenge. Limited financial resources affect his ability to access the support and opportunities needed to continue improving.

Overcoming Challenges Beyond the Field

Emmanuel completed his secondary education at Holy Mary Comprehensive School in 2025 and obtained his NECO GCE certificate that same year. However, financial difficulties have prevented him from continuing his education.

Determined to support himself and his athletic ambitions, he previously worked as a loader at construction sites during school holidays, carrying cement to earn money. After secondary school, he also worked as a club bouncer to help fund his needs and athletics career. He has since stepped away from regular bouncing work to focus on training, although he still occasionally works at weekend events.

His journey has required him to balance the immediate need to earn a living with his long-term ambitions in sport and education.

His aunt remains one of his biggest supporters, encouraging him, helping him plan for the future, and reminding him to believe in himself. His faith also gives him strength. Emmanuel draws personal meaning from his name, which means “God is with us.”

Although he acknowledges that academics, particularly mathematics, have been challenging, he remains willing to learn and improve. He hopes to continue his education while pursuing opportunities to compete internationally.

Support Through the Athlete Impact Fund

Emmanuel applied to the Athlete Impact Fund seeking ₦1.5 million to support his development as an athlete. Through the Athlete Impact Fund (AIF) 2.0, Paragon Sports Development Foundation is awarding him ₦250,000 towards his continued journey.

While the award is less than the amount he originally requested, it represents meaningful support for an athlete working to overcome financial barriers and build a future through sport.

For Emmanuel, greater financial stability could help him focus more consistently on training, prepare for competitions, and pursue opportunities to develop his talent. The support also recognises the determination he has shown in continuing his athletic journey despite difficult circumstances.

Looking Ahead

Emmanuel hopes to become one of the best throwers in the world. He also wants to continue his education and become a better version of himself, both on and off the field.

His story is about more than the distance of a throw. It is about a young man who has worked to support himself, remained committed to his ambitions, and continued to believe in what is possible despite financial and personal challenges.

At Paragon Sports Development Foundation, we believe that talented athletes deserve opportunities to grow, compete, and pursue their ambitions regardless of their financial circumstances.

Through the Athlete Impact Fund, we remain committed to helping young African athletes overcome barriers and move closer to their goals.

From 9 metres to 17.85 metres, Emmanuel’s progress is proof of what persistence can achieve. With continued effort and access to the right opportunities, he is determined to keep reaching further.
