Across Nigeria, young athletes dedicate themselves to training, competing, and pursuing their sporting ambitions. They wake up early, put in the work, listen to their coaches, and push themselves to improve.

But for many grassroots athletes, one challenge stands between their talent and their full potential: access to appropriate sporting equipment.

Running spikes, throwing shoes, jumping shoes, and other event-specific gear are essential tools for many athletes. Yet these items can be expensive or difficult to obtain, particularly for young athletes developing their abilities with limited financial resources.

For an athlete, having the determination to train is one thing. Having the equipment needed to train appropriately is another.

At Paragon Sports Development Foundation, we believe that a lack of resources should not be the reason a promising athlete struggles to develop.

That belief drives our Kit Up an Athlete initiative.

Turning Support Into Access

In 2026, Paragon Sports Development Foundation reached 50 Nigerian grassroots athletes across nine states through Kit Up an Athlete.

The initiative provided sporting equipment suited to athletes’ different events, including running spikes, throwing shoes, jumping shoes, running gear, and throwing gear.

Rather than treating every athlete’s needs as identical, the initiative recognized that athletes participate in different disciplines and require different forms of support.

For a sprinter, appropriate footwear can be an important part of preparing for training and competition. For a thrower or jumper, having equipment suited to their event matters too.

By helping athletes access the gear they need, Kit Up an Athlete addresses a practical barrier in their development and supports their continued participation in sport.

Why the Right Equipment Matters

Athlete development requires more than talent and determination. It also depends on access to suitable training environments, knowledgeable coaches, appropriate equipment, and opportunities to compete.

When athletes lack essential resources, their development can become more difficult. Families and coaches may have to make difficult financial decisions, and young athletes may have to train without the equipment they need.
